[Hawkins]' backstory:

Physical Description:

Hawkins sports grey hair that is rough and full, as well as an occasionally trimmed goatee. He wears
a worn tan sleeve coat that resembles a map, but covered in splotches and stains - he is a focused man,
and sometimes thoughtless as to his manners or fashion. For all that, he is a merchant: careful and
diligent, always taking stock of that which he already has, and constantly reinventing his own profession
- part of how he got into magic, after all. He is a slight man, shorter than most and thinner than a
great deal. He came into the arcane arts in his late teens, while working as a merchant mapmaker, and
became obsessed with exploring the magical world. Years later, he is a strange and new creature, for he
is now an adventurer.

Hawkins is twenty nine, and has only begun to explore the world. Though he prefers careful research
and study to direct exploration, his thirst for knowledge takes him to exotic locations on various
adventures and quests of study.

Style:
Taircape comes from a long line of cartographer and mapmakers, and he applies his mapmaking
mentality to his arcane studies. He seeks to map out the links between spells of the magical universe to
bring order to the arcane arts.

Hawkins has begun making specialized maps for himself in order to trace the sources of the components
he uses for his spells. He keeps both a tube of 'Atlases Geographical and Historical' to trace the location
and trends of his arcane materials, and often researches the history of a spell so that he might learn how
to vary it with another material - and what this material might entail. As an explorer himself, Hawkins
values the nuances of spells, skills, and languages. As a mapmaker, he knows context is important.

His spellbooks themselves are mapped out charts of spells, part of a greater arcane topography he
is constantly researching. Hawkins is a curious individual and takes every opportunity to delve into
the secrets of magic, tracing the stories and variations on spells. He views each spell as a place on a
map linked to every other spell or magic. He believes that the world of magic is constant but each
new 'invention' is simply a new mark upon this overall mapscape and that, like the world, can be
mapped to better trace the links between all spells.

One of his methods is the importance of the sphere. He experiments with different ways of conveying
maps, the question of the shape of the planet, and how best to accurately convey the distance between
points on a map. He keeps a layered map of his local region and a skychart, as well as a book of times
and alterations. He believes in efficiency, directness, and order, and so keeps detailed notes of every
type. His aim with his magics is to be able to keep all information and knowledge easily at hand and
available.

"A sphere shows us intention - of all the places in a sphere, we choose to move in a certain direction
at certain times. Through this study. we see where in relation to the subject dangers are, and
opportunities and rewards ."

Familiar with the following map types: Climate maps, Economic or resource maps, Physical maps,
Political maps, Road maps, Topographic maps, Thematic Maps, Inventory Maps, Mobility Maps,
Transit, Charts.

[Elusha]:

Though he never speaks of it, Hawkins lost his love, Joliet Elusa, to an experiment gone awry. He has
dedicated his life to mapping out the arcane world in the hopes that one day, his maps find a way home
to his heart.

As they cast the spell, Elusa was shunted out of existence with a terrible scream.  Hawkins remains certain that somewhere on some plane, she is alive, and that whatever it takes, he will find her.  He has a locket with her picture and a piece of her hair in it so that he might use it to find her one day."

Family:

His father, Leif Mackenzie, was also an explorer, and through his business, came to know a good deal of
mapmakers. Leif's mother was a skilled and shrewd businesswoman, and her no-nonsense attitude
helped raise the whole Hawkins household. As Hawkins was the youngest and frailest of Mackenzie's
seven children, he was apprenticed to a mapmaker in base city (create). Hawkins has not seen his family
in years, as they, like their father, are all adventurers: the eldest, Byrd, and the third-eldest,
Amundsen, are the only surviving siblings that Hawkins has seen since his apprenticeship.
His older brother, Humphrey Mackenzie, was killed in a dungeon. The family has not heard from the
other three siblings, Drake, Ralleigh, and Boone, but they are presumed dead... or still exploring. He still
writes to the family, wherever their adventures take them. They all presume Hawkins to have settled
into mapmaking, and he has not disturbed them with any other news, detailing only his mapmaking explorations.
